The word virago is first recorded in Old English, as the name given by Adam to Eve in the Vulgate version of the Bible (that is, the Latin version of the text prepared in the 4th century). The Latin word virago (from virman) means a man-like or heroic woman; according to Genesis, Adam chose this name because Eve was made from the body of a man. The word was adopted as a general term for heroic female warrior in the late 14th century, leading to the much less favourable sense bold and impudent woman, from which the current sense domineering, violent or bad-tempered woman developed. |
